Frequently Asked Questions
How is the dam secured to ensure that the pressure of floodwaters does not allow movement or displacement of the dam?
The weight of the water inside the dam provides stability for the tube while being further secured in place by straps that are connected to permanent anchors. The anchors are preinstalled by Bayou City Dams after purchase.
Can the dam be sold separately from the cart?
Yes, each Bayou City Dam is customized to meet individual client needs. The tube, spool and cart can each be sold separately, along with the water pump and optional bypass wall.
How can I have a continuous dam around my entire property if I have obstructions such as an outdoor AC unit near my fence?
Our By-Pass wall plate squeezes the dam into tight spaces allowing the dam to protect your property during a flood even if your property has areas with as little as 2 feet of clearance.
Can I still use the dam if I have a fenced in back yard?
Functioning gates on each side of your property are required to allow the tube or the bypass wall to fully surround your structure.
How many people are needed to deploy a Bayou City Dam?
The Bayou City Dam system is custom designed in a way that a single child is able to easily deploy the dam (as seen on the home page). If a tube is purchased without the deployment cart, one to two (depending on dam size) adults will be needed to deploy the dam.
How long does it take to deploy a Bayou City Dam?
For 200 feet of dam (about the size needed for a typical residential property) it would take one person about 15 minutes to roll out the tube and secure the straps to the permanent anchors if they are using the deployment cart. A 3-inch water pump will fill the dam in less than an hour (26 inch diameter tube) and garden hoses will fill the dam in approximately 3.5 hours. For larger commercial properties more time will be needed (unless multiple water pumps are used). The speed and ease of deployment allows the user to avoid unnecessary deployment of the dam, waiting until flooding is more imminent.
How much storage is required for the dam and cart?
Our standard cart is 44 inches tall, 54 inches wide and 52 inches deep, which will easily fit in the corner of your garage or storage shed.
What is the difference between Bayou City Dams and the double-barreled cofferdams currently on the market?
The double barrel system includes two bladders contained in a single sleeve. Double barrel tubes do not use anchors because the 2 side by side chambers provide sufficient stability. For this reason, the double barrel products are most effective as a reactive measure against a storm as pre-installation of anchors is not required. The Bayou City Dam is most effective when used as a pro-active measure against flooding. The main advantage of the single barrel system is the ease of storage and deployment due to the significant difference in size and maneuverability.
What is the benefit of the single barrel dam system over the double barrel dam?
A single barrel tube is half the storage, half the fill time, half the weight and half the material of the double barrel dams. Our pre-installed permanent anchors are at least 3 feet long, and are proven to withstand the force of flood waters.
Are the anchors an eye-sore? I don't want the anchors to distract from my manicured yard or the professional look of my commercial property.
The earth anchors are discreet, level with the ground, and covered with a 2 inch plastic cap. The anchor caps are discreet enough to likely not be noticed and will not affect landscaping or lawn care in anyway. The concrete anchors are even more discreet with 1/2 inch caps.
Do you offer deployment services and after-use drainage and clean-up?
We offer deployment services for our commercial customers and post deployment drainage, clean-up and re-storage services for all customers.
What is the size of the dam?
Standard diameters (height) are 26 and 38 inches, however customized diameters (height) are available as needed. Dam lengths are customized to meet the needs of individual properties.
How will a Bayou City Dam impact my neighbors in the event of a flood? Will it make them more likely to flood?
Given the dams are placed near the customer’s property, the displacement of flood waters caused by a water dam is negligible and will have virtually no impact on other properties in your vicinity.
In the event that we lose power, will we need a generator to keep the dam functioning?
You have the option of using either an electric or a gas-powered pump. It is our recommendation to use a gas powered pump so that a power outage should have no effect in protecting your property.
Can a Bayou City Dam be reused?
Yes, with proper care and storage, our dams are designed to be used again and again.
